Final Thesis Project

Re-imagining Canning Town

This project proposes a gym that redefines urban fitness by integrating environmental stewardship and multi-species cohabitation. Located on the former Peacock Gym site in London’s Newham Borough, the design responds to rigorous environmental and ecological analysis, highlighting the presence of red- and amber-listed bird species in the area. The gym incorporates tailored spaces for birds, separate from human activity but embedded within the architectural fabric, informed by wind simulations, microclimate studies, and noise mapping. Crucially, several design decisions were shaped by projections of future environmental conditions, ensuring long-term resilience for both human and avian users. The design not only supports community health and self-defence in a deprived borough, but also addresses the urgent need for resilient urban ecosystems. Through adaptable façade panels, green roofs, and species-specific nesting zones, the project exemplifies how environmental data—past, present, and predicted—can directly shape inclusive, bioclimatic architecture.
